From taking a ride on the characteristic ferris wheel to enjoying roasted almonds, the Hamburger DOM is Germany’s largest funfair and offers attractions for all ages. It takes place on the spacious Heiligengeistfeld near St. Pauli, where approximately 260 amusement rides and 110 booths with gastronomic specialties delight millions of visitors three times a year – one month in spring, summer, and winter. Typical event periods are:
Frühlings-DOM: End of March till end of April
Sommer-DOM: End of July till end of August
Winter-DOM: Beginning of November till beginning of December
Tip: A special highlight are the impressive fireworks each Friday night at 10:30 pm.
The non-profit World Press Photo Foundation is known for organizing a worldwide contest of photojournalism and documentary photography. The prize-winning photos are showcased in exhibitions that aim at increasing visibility for high-quality press photography.
Each year in May, one of the exhibitions takes place at the Gruner + Jahr Pressehaus that is located directly at the port of Hamburg at the train station Baumwall. Entrance is free of charge and daily visiting hours are from 10 am – 6 pm, on Wednesdays extended till 8 pm.
Every year in mid-May, Hamburg celebrates the world’s greatest harbour festival with many fascinating ships participating from all parts of the world. Highlights of the anniversary celebrations include the grand arrival and departure parades, the tugboat ballet, impressive fireworks, and a variety of live bands partying all night long.
